Research and data exhibits how flexible seating has a positive impact on a student's education. There are many benefits of incorporating flexible seating. Some of the reasons why I want to include flexible seating in my classroom is to encourage collaboration with their peers. In my class, I incorporate differentiated instruction during my core subjects. Not only would having access to flexible seating ease the process of my students getting into small groups and/or pairs, but it would also help me teach to all learning styles and the varying levels of my students. Currently, my students sit on the floor, or in my small teacher desk, leaving them uncomfortable or too squished together and we all know that an uncomfortable student, is an unproductive student. Also, flexible seating would empower my students and give my students a voice by allowing them to have a choice on where they would like to sit that day. This alone would encourage learning because it's something new, exciting and it makes learning fun. As I have mentioned, both my classes are inclusion classes containing students with varying exceptionalities. One major reason why I think adding flexible seating to my class would positively impact my students is it would allow for movement and it stimulates students' sense of touch. Movement (especially for those with an exceptionality) increases blood and oxygen flow which positively affects cognitive development, helps students focus, and helps boost brain function. There are so many positives that come with incorporating flexible seating, I hope you agree with some of the reasons why it's important and understand why I would love to include it in my classroom. I hope that you can help make our dreams a reality.
