My students are from lower socio-economic backgrounds. They are relatively transient and unfortunately they have a very narrow world view due to limited exposure. They are interested in finding out that there is more to the world then the zip code that they live in. Despite their obstacles in life they show up every day and they want to learn. Every year my students are thrilled to learn about the Holocaust, not the gruesome details, but they love to discuss the "why" and "how" did this happen. I always see tremendous growth in maturity and compassion when we are studying this unit.
