This project will allow opportunities to teach my students how to care for and be responsible for other living things! It will also allow them to experience having a pet, which many of them do not have the opportunity to do! Having a pet in the classroom is a great way for students to have jobs, as well as a new incentive for working hard and meeting expectations! A classroom pet can help foster a family atmosphere in our class and demonstrate what it means to use teamwork to keep something healthy and happy! In order to foster this responsibility and care, there are a few things needed to make this happen. First, we will need a large cage for our classroom bunny that is sanitary, mobile, and comfortable for the pet. I have chosen one that students will be able to reach feeders and water bottles easily. This way, I can assign “care teams” weekly. I also chose this cage because it is easy for a pair of 10 year olds to clean! Included with the cleaning supplies necessary are disposable gloves, aprons, a broom and a swifter. Students will learn that pets need way more than just food and water to be healthy and happy! Hopefully through this project they will also foster a sense for tidiness and organization into their own lives if they haven’t already! Other items that I have included with this project include puppy pads and a small playpen that will fit in our reading area for “read to someone (in this case the bunny), Lysol wipes for cleanliness, as well as sustaining items such as food, litter, and toys.
