One of the texts I love teaching is The Odyssey. However, as each year of new students comes in, they become farther and farther removed from the language and concepts held in this text. As a way to bridge the gap between the overall themes and ideas of The Odyssey, I want to introduce the unit of “Challenging Truths/Comjng-of-Age” with The Fault in Our Stars. I feel that both of these texts address the ideas about being remembered for something great and how to find our place in the world, but I feel that TFIOS gives students a chance to see these concepts, along with ideas about dealing with difficult challenges and struggles, and allows for students to address those themes in a text more relatable and relevant to their culture.
