I have been hired 10 days into the school year to create an engaging, safe and exciting classroom. My classroom has the necessities: tables, chairs, bookcases and a teacher's desk. However, research shows that providing choice and flexible seating to students enhances their learning by allowing them to decide how they want to learn and where they want to learn. These items would be in spaces in the classroom that would used during independent work where a child could choose to read quietly, work diligently with a partner, engage in discourse while participating in math games, or choosing to write in a secluded area, to name a few activities. The potential for all that we can do with additional and flexible seating in our room is limitless and truly exciting.
