Many students have expressed the desire to work with clay, but unfortunately, my small budget does not allow for this. This kiln would provide my middle school with a foundation for the ceramics program I plan to build as a young teacher. Having a kiln in the room would benefit all the art students in my school by enabling them to create functional and decorative objects with their hands. Relating art to other contexts increases students' holistic understanding of the world around them. Ceramics also offers many meaningful connections to social studies and science. The relationship between art and history over time is extremely difficult to grasp, but the physicality of creating ceramic work will enable students to experience history in a real way. The therapeutic nature of ceramics would be helpful to students as social and emotional issues are on the rise among young teens.
