Though filled with vibrant personalities and rambunctious spirits, 1st graders often have quiet voices when presenting. First, because they are physically small compared to the big world, and then because they lack understanding of how giving voice to your thoughts and ideas can impact the world they live in. I want to give my students the confidence to speak without worrying about being heard. I want them to use the language they currently have while also providing them with a further purpose to acquire more language. It is a cycle of growth that can feed on itself if I can implement it with frequency and across a variety of subject areas. My students will make presentations where they can focus on the message they are trying to deliver because their confidence is not subdued by shyness or the natural quiet of their 1st grade voices. They will present in both English and Hmong. They can lead the class chants and poems with the microphone. They can teach each other. They can practice new ways to use language from the front of the class. They will read their own writing in their own voices with ease, while their peers listen attentively, and likewise, with ease. Hearing one's own voice coming out of a speaker is exciting. Not having to worry about loud enough means they can focus on their message and their language. The common core has quite a few speaking standards, but districts don't often view a wireless speaker system as a necessity for developing these standards when textbooks and supplies are needed too. Having this equipment can bring a new dimension to my students' understanding of how simply being loud enough to be heard can build their confidence and grow both of their languages.
