Over the years, our district's budget for the English department has dwindled, hindering our ability to provide rich and engaging resources for our students. Gatz's novel follows three young characters as they flee from their violent war-torn countries and seek refuge in other countries. Their journey is relevant to events in today's society and will challenge them to think about how we as a global community treat others. My college prep students truly deserve a new and powerful text to help connect their learning with the experiences of others' or even their own personal experiences. Through their work with the novel, they will track the characters' journeys, learn about the events surrounding their escape and tie it into the larger context of history.
