Do our seating choices make a difference in learning? Yes! Multiple options means students feel comfortable, safe and relaxed in their learning environment. My students benefit from the freedom to decide where they'll sit, and move around when they need to; this, in turn, helps them stay focused, engaged and awake. I have students who work full time jobs in addition to school. Others work at home taking care of siblings, cooking, cleaning and doing laundry. It's impossible to work this many hours and also, come to school to sit in rigid desks at school. In our class, we do a lot of reading and writing and speaking. I would love the addition of some comfortable seats so my students feel relaxed and comfortable as we share and learn.
