Many of our students are interested in the fine arts, however, this area tends to be overlooked by the common core curriculum (even though it is emphasized in STEAM education). Teachers are required to teach to so many different standards that the fine arts end up falling by the wayside. Because art is not considered essential, this is an area that is hopelessly underfunded and underemphasized. However, there is a basic human need for creativity. By opening an extracurricular art club, I want to give these kids the opportunity to meet once a week to learn basic watercolor techniques and crate masterpieces, thereby igniting their passion for this amazing medium.
