Twenty years ago, I presented class notes on hand-written overhead projector sheets. I hand-wrote report cards from an analog gradebook, and sketched geometry diagrams for tests by hand with a ruler and a flair pen. Today, I can reproduce almost everything I see in a mathematics textbook on a Microsoft word document. I can post class notes, assignments, and grades online almost instantly. Just about everything in education has been improved with technology, except that sharing student work in mathematics courses is still an enormous hassle. When I want to share student work from a recent test or assignment, I have three unsatisfactory choices: 1) I can walk halfway across my building to scan the solutions, email them to myself, save them to a file, and bring that file back up on my desk top for when I need them during class. 2) I can ask several students to write their solutions on the chalkboard, which wastes several minutes of classtime that we can't afford to lose, or... 3) I can retype or re-write the solutions myself for display on my Smartboard, although typing formulas in word processing documents is tedious and slow, and hand-writing is also time-consuming and looks unprofessional. We need a document camera! This way, I could show students various solutions to the same test question to demonstrate a proficient response, and I could instantly display student work that I observe during class, in a manner that no class time or outside prep time would be wasted by anyone re-writing or re-typing solutions.
