Students with special needs and significant behavior difficulties are taught the skills to function socially that most typically developing students pick up naturally. The various emotions that come with anxiety, frustration and language deficits that these students encounter often lead to maladaptive behavior that prohibits them from being with their peers. Our focus on the whole child helps teach social skills, social/emotional learning and how to independently cope with the intense emotions that they have. Many of the students are non-verbal or have difficulty putting their emotions into words. Providing handheld fidgets, sensory stimulating items and allowing them to independently seek out a break to help calm themselves will help these students. These learned strategies can give students, parents, educators and peers access to opportunities that may not have been available if these calming techniques were not taught. We are teaching the tools that are needed to help them be successful in the community as they grow older and enter into the workforce, community and college.
