We have been very privileged to receive many new items for our brand new 3K classroom, but we are lacking in any gross motor supplies. Gross motor skills are the abilities required to control the large muscles of the body for walking, jumping, skipping, and more. Working on gross motor skills helps a child gain strength and confidence in their body. It also helps them get exercise and physical activity, which is important for a healthy lifestyle. Developing these skills early gives children the ability to do more complex skills in future activities, such as playing soccer with a team. Living in temporary housing brings limitations as to how much time can be spent outside at playgrounds and giving their larger muscles the opportunity to work. In my classroom I will focus on lessons that will help to develop many areas that they would otherwise not get an opportunity to practice, such as hand/eye coordination,by throwing beanbags into a net; propreoceptive awareness by learning to walk and balance on a balance beam; and overall strength using soft, safe large building blocks! Having good gross motor control also helps with cognitive development! These children will be a step ahead with your help!
