World Music Drumming is an exciting curriculum that is offered to our 6th grade students. Students learn to listen actively while working to improvise, create, and perform their own music. They learn to communicate effectively and work within a large group to accomplish shared goals, and they develop an appreciation for peoples and musical cultures of Africa and the Caribbean. The World Music Drumming curriculum provides a unique musical experience that fully addresses national core standards, while also emphasizing important social and emotional learning areas such as self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship skills. There is a need for additional instruments in our classroom to provide greater opportunities for our students. Additional drums would reduce instances where students need to take turns or share, and this project would increase student engagement and activity. Students can easily tell the difference between a higher quality, tunable tubano like those in this project, and a "pre-tuned" instrument such as the drums that we currently use. They would be thrilled to add these drums to our circle, and take a turn with an instrument that would expand their expressive capabilities! The most exciting moments in class for many students come when they have the chance to play the most unique instruments. The students ask enthusiastically to play them, and it is easy to see how they inspire creativity. The djembe would allow students who are ready to build more elaborate solos and develop leadership skills the chance to play a special "leader" drum in the ensemble. Please help us to create even more powerful performances in our music class through this project!
