First graders are wild about Mo Willems and Kevin Henkes books! Using his engaging and predictable books helps students visualize extremely hard concepts such as theme, author style, and inferencing. Research has shown that when teachers use high interest, high enjoyment books to teach content standards and skill application that students typically respond and achieve mastery when compared to traditional teaching of one standard in isolation. Application is the key to student mastery; and when they are able to pull from their own knowledge base the meaning of a standard, then we know they are learning. Teachers will use all of these titles in conjunction with our district's balanced literacy mini lessons to teach theme, character analysis and writers' styles and how they relate to readers' experiences.
