With these books and materials I will be able to engage my students in new ways and on new topics. In evaluating my library collection recently, I found that there was a lack of high-interest books in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) collection areas. With these new books to supplement our existing collection, I will be able to encourage students to learn more about STEM in their personal reading, and I will be better equipped to find answers to STEM related questions they bring to me. While I currently have a small maker-space in the library and offer a maker club after school, the focus of the materials and club has predominantly been arts and crafts. The addition of Legos, K’nex, Qubits, and Keva Planks will allow students to build and engineer structures and vehicles on their own, without my guidance. The Snap Circuits will allow students to tinker and create electrical projects in a safe way. These items are things the students can explore and learn about on their own, following their personal curiosity and interests. The Silhouette is an exciting machine that can show students how their computer designs and engineering can be brought to life. It will give me a chance to teach students new technology skills while having fun. Having these materials in our library will allow our maker-space to expand to include STEM as well as arts and crafts.
