My students will use the Calm down corner as a pleasant place to practice noticing and naming their feelings, calming down, and problem solving with coaching from the school social worker, in order to return to an emotional and behavioral state where they will be ready to return to their classrooms.
Students are already coming to the social workers office when they are upset, but with the visual and tactile sensory items, they will have tools to help themselves calm down. The rug and the beanbag will establish the idea of a special area of the room where they can pause and go to for a break. While they are sitting in the beanbag chair, they will be able to comfortably read the book, which will help them to name their feelings and make choices of how to regulate their emotions. My students who speak English as a Second Language, who have a diagnosis of autism, or who have learning or communication difficulties will be especially helped by the non-verbal and visual items in the calm down corner.
