“The evidence indicates, in short, that manipulatives can provide valuable support for student learning when teachers interact over time with the students to help them build links between the object, the symbol, and the mathematical idea both represent.” –Adding It Up: Helping Children Learn Mathematics, National Research Council (2001) Students who are presented with the opportunity to use manipulatives report that they are more interested in mathematics. I came into this classroom just a year ago, with limited access to math manipulatives. With donations to this project and funding from the PTA I will be able to provide a math tool kit to each student. They will not have to share their manipulatives with classmates, which will cut down on the risk of spreading illnesses, along with eliminating the time needed to spend having to clean them if they have to share. My students will love getting their hands on these manipulatives and having their own toolkit to practice building math skills on their own.
