Students with special needs often require a curriculum that will be broken down into step-by-step instructions, predictable outcomes, and scripts to maintain conversation. A cafe within the school building allows for our students to work on a variety of life skills that will be essential to their overall growth as young adults. Students will be asked to handle money and make change, turn take on conversations with unfamiliar staff, manage supply lists and inventory, and work with their peers as a team. Students will work in class on deciphering between dollar amounts and working on change either by using a calculator or other manipulatives. The opportunity to work on turn taking in conversations will be facilitated by the staff. Students will learn about appropriate topics of conversation, listening to those who they are talking to, and proper greetings. Each student will have the opportunity to work in every part of the cafe. Goal of mastery should be achieved when students can independently follow their daily tasks or with minimal assistance. Ultimately, the skills they can acquire working in the cafe can help with transitioning our students into the real world where they will have the confidence to be a successful employee.
