I have been an urban elementary theater teacher in Saint Paul, MN for nine years. My students reflect the true diversity of America. I want to create a library of inclusive and diverse picture books for my students to read, and create original drama work that is reflective of their own stories and experiences. I want to promote learning that allows my students to tell their own unique story, as well as listen and find connections to their own journey's in the stories of others. I want to use the stories of Martin Luther King and Sojourner Truth to empower my African American students. I want my Muslim students to learn strength and perseverance from Malala Yousafzai. I want to use stories told by Native Peoples to help my students understand that honoring their place in our world is honoring the land we live on. As a teacher of the creative art form of drama, giving my students human experiences to study and explore is ultimately the best way to learn and understand the world of theater and how it can give a voice to those whose voices are not always heard first.
