Many of my students don't see themselves in the books I read to them or the books they read to themselves. It is very important that they see themselves represented in the books they read. The diverse books will help them feel a part of their classroom and a part of their community. This will help students connect and understand each other both inside the classroom and within their community. I think it even more important now than ever when I do lessons remotely that they see themselves in the books I read to them. Often times, when I read a read-aloud book I give the students a homework assignment that is light and fun based on the book. In order for the students to relate and connect to the book and homework assignment, they need to see themselves represented in the book. These diverse books will allow them to do that. This will aid in a better classroom community, a better understanding and compassion for each other as well as foster a love for reading.
