We are an urban elementary school nestled in the midst of one of the most diverse zip codes in the country, 98118. My students represent many faiths, 14 ethnic groups, 20 languages, and a range of income brackets--60% qualifying for free and reduced status. We strive to be an inclusive, equitable educational community that nurtures excellence in academics and social justice. Students develop a deep respect for themselves, each other's diversity, and the natural world we all share. We believe each student has something worthwhile to contribute to his/her community. I am just a guide in helping them find the courage to navigate their way:building friendships where they seemed unlikely, bridging language gaps that seemed impossible, connecting students to each other and thus the world. We encourage our students to use their voices to speak their truth and tell their story using writing, technology, music and art.
