My school is a Title I school, which means we must rely on limited federal funds for basic resources. Our lack of funds means our textbooks haven’t been replaced for the past few decades. They are falling apart and the content is not only outdated but also irrelevant to the experiences of these students – who are majority students of color from disadvantaged backgrounds. My goal is to introduce a new curriculum this year using texts that my kids can actually relate to, with stories that look and sound like their own. The texts I have chosen are Ghost and Ghost Boy, stories that bring up conversations about racism and gun violence centering young black protagonists. These texts will allow students to learn critical thinking and reading skills using materials that are actually accessible and interesting to them. I've already noticed the stark difference in class engagement when I've used photocopied passages of this text in class - students were focused and asking interesting questions. If I'm able to acquire these books and use them in my main curriculum, I know it will make a huge difference for my class.
