Students will use these yoga mats as a comfortable, safe space for a daily mindful meditation and yoga practice. Mindfulness is a crucial practice for calming down the body’s stress response system when they are dealing with toxic stress from home, from ongoing COVID changes, and from simply having their bodies enduring a daily storm of hormone changes. It’s hard for middle schoolers to figure out who they are in the scheme of life, let alone doing so inside Our students want to do better, but because of the daily whirlwind in their lives, caused by poverty and the trauma that often comes with living and surviving in hard situations, they struggle deeply with connecting to school, to teachers, and to the very places and organizations that are designed to help them. They desperately need a way to calm the whirlwind, to tune into their bodies, to calm their minds, and to find a space to connect with others in a calm, regulated state. Once we can create a cocoon of calm amidst the chaos of the life around them, we can help to bring out that typical joyful seventh-grader energy and help them move forward into a different future than what their trauma and ACEs have already mapped out for them. And ultimately, our hope is that by practicing yoga, regularly, in a calm location that is safe and comfortable, we can settle their minds and bodies so they can be able to connect with the teachers and the education that is around them. There are many examples of this type of project having great success in schools and with kids who aren’t so different from ours.
