I would love to include an authentic reading assignment of an entertaining novel to learn more about about the moon. My students will be charting the phases of the moon every night in October. Tying together observations discussed during science, and facts learned from reading historical fiction will motivate and encourage my students to become active learners. Presenting a new book, with the intention of my students finding a broad collection of details they'll learn about the moon and its relationship to Earth, will increase their motivation to read to learn. Small groups of students or a reading buddy will discuss their nightly observations of the phases of the moon along with their book throughout a full month of changes in the moon's appearance.
