Right now, every desk in my classroom has been there since 1988 when our building opened. The lighting is harsh; there are holes in the walls; the seats are bolted to the desks. It's not a comfortable learning environment, particularly for students who only have bad associations with classrooms. I'd like to create a flexible classroom with comfortable seating, soft lighting, and additional storage. I'm envisioning students cozying up around the center table with their school laptops, talking about their latest papers, or hanging out in a comfortable chair as they work on revisions. I want them to be able to come into the space, switch on a lamp, grab a book from the shelf, and actually enjoy the look and feel of being at school. I want my restless students to know that they can grab an exercise chair and quietly bounce their way through a tough day, if need be. I want everyone to want to come into my classroom.
