In my U.S. history class, students are exposed to primary documents, paintings, political cartoons, and photos. When I show them these sources, I ask for observations, help define terms, answer questions, facilitate discussions, and model note-taking and annotation techniques. I love providing these activities to sharpen their observation skills, develop their critical thinking skills, and increase their analytical development. Using the iPad and pencil to record their observations will make my classroom feel more real, and will make annotating flow more easily in a distance learning setting. As distance learning provides a safe learning format, it also challenges us to engage our students meaningfully in a virtual setting. I'd like my students to continue to have this "real life" analysis experience even though they are distance learning this fall.
