Today's students have more distractions than in any other time in recent history. Not only do they have friends, activities and telephones, they have technological distractions! Most teenagers rarely put away their phones! Smart phones have taken what was once available only on computers to a new level. Students are always connected via social media or video games. It is difficult to get my students interested in reading! The answer for getting kids to read books again? Graphic novels! Graphic novels bridge the gap between video and narrative. The graphics are great stand-ins for the videos the kids watch and support (or activate) the kids' ability to 'see' the narrative, while the text grabs their attention! I have used graphic novels with a few of my students that needed help the most and experienced great success with it. After discovering that they did enjoy reading, they started reading traditional books. However, I do not have the financial resources to provide a copy for each of my students to use in the classroom. "March Book 1" is a fantastic source, as it speaks to the movement of Black Lives Matter through the lens of John Lewis' memories. I am confident that using this particular text will keep the students engaged and allow them a resource to help process the climate in the US today. Thank you for your consideration!
