As a middle school social studies teacher, I am always seeking ways to expose my scholars to diverse perspectives. I would like to incorporate wide reading interests and find ways for students to connect to history and to Native American issues in our country. I believe that my students would connect very strongly to the experiences of Sherman Alexie in his novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. This would help them to empathize with the struggles that he faced, and to also empathize with each other. I would use this novel as a Reader's Theater, in writing and social-emtional activities, and in teaching reading strategies.
