When I began working at my school last year, many students were interested in playing chess. I borrowed several chess boards and students stayed after school to play chess twice a week. Several students would come to borrow boards so that they could play chess during lunch. Over the course of the year, my students made significant improvements in their chess abilities. At the district tournament, we won first place in the middle school tournament, and second place at the high school tournament. They now have their sights set on winning the state tournament this year, and students are regularly checking in with me to find out when we can begin to prepare. I would like to expand our program and get as many students involved as possible. Running this chess club has not only allowed me the opportunity to build my students' critical thinking skills through chess, but it has also enabled me to talk to them about their aspirations, and help them achieve their long-term academic goals. Anything that you can donate will go a long way to helping our students grow as chess players, problem-solvers, and critical thinkers!
