At El Sausal, 96% of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. I teach 110 English Language Learners in Academic Language Development and Tutorial Enrichment classes in East Salinas—a community shaped by the hard work of underprivileged, migrant farm worker families. Our students thrive when learning is hands-on and engaging. They work on creative projects that bring academic concepts to life, but limited school resources—exacerbated by delays in federal funding—make it difficult to provide the materials they need. Additional support, such as stress-relief tools like fidget items, would also help students manage the anxiety of high-stakes state exams. These small resources can make a big difference in helping our students feel confident, focused, and ready to succeed.
