My weekly math schedule centers on new material being taught and modeled on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. With the use of a smart board (the only one in the school), I am able to implement "I do, we do" with ease as students take notes, come to the board to practice steps, and respond to questions regarding processes. By Thursday students are ready to complete the third step of "You do". Math workshop offers a variety of practice with clearly defined expectations and safe group environments. Stations are limited however to the resources in my classroom. I want my students to be active learners and math lends itself to this. There are many great manipulatives that engage the learner and increase understanding and growth. Seventy-three percent of my students are At-Risk, thirty percent are Students with Disabilities, and fifty-eight percent are Language Learners. There is a lot of overlap in these numbers but this shows me that I need to be more effective and more prepared for each minute these students are in my classroom. The best way to increase their interest, to make the content accessible and to have students reflect on their learning is to create a dynamic experience during our Math Workshops. Math manipulatives like Magna-Tiles, sufficient classroom resources like colored paper for foldables and classroom posters, and proper storage solutions like station boxes will all help to contribute to my high expectations for my students this year. These resources will also be used with a small group of students during a daily Math Intervention class. With the use of these manipulatives and materials I hope to make our weekly Math Workshop an engaging time that my students look forward to each week. I believe they will become social, cooperative, and reflective learners.
