As a reading interventionist, my goal is to be intentional about creating a diverse classroom library that is culturally relevant for the students I teach and large enough for students to find a book that matches their independent reading level. On the first day of class, nearly every single hand raised when I asked my struggling readers who didn't like to read. I promised them that I would work tirelessly this year to change that. By bringing these books into my classroom I hope to surround them with literature that they won't be able to put down. In addition to being able to choose books that interest them, these new books will allow my students to read about diverse characters and introduce them to themes and complex histories that resonate with their lived experiences. My students need literature that inspires and awakens their potential to be the narrators of their own stories and imagine a more just world.
