I would like to start the flexible seating initiative in my classroom. My students can sometimes be in a self-contained environment based on how they behave; however I want them to still feel comfortable in their environment. Flexible seating will allow these students to have a space of their own where they can cool down, vent about stressful situations, as well as, learn social and academic skills to help them be successful. My diverse population of students with social emotional and behavioral challenges will benefit greatly from having various seating options in the self-contained classroom setting. When self-contained for behavioral problems, these students tend to want to sit anywhere, but in a small cramped school desk. Our goal is to get the students to cool down and process the situation at hand and that would easily be accomplished if the students had flexible seating. When students are comfortable, they’re more likely to communicate and share with the support staff. I would like to create a flexible seating environment in my classroom to expose my students to an environment that is centered on educational and social emotional support. Providing my students with a comfortable environment of their own here at school will assist with participation and motivation; as well as, overall student achievement academically, socially, and emotionally.
