Microscopes can be a challenge to users that are new to using them. When microscopes do not function properly students often become frustrated as they do not know what they should be seeing (or not seeing); a blur, crack or bubble can be very deceiving. Students using malfunctioning scopes often get hung up on blurry or blotchy images, never finding the desired visual until I have time to help them; with up to 12 lab groups at a time this can sometimes leave students looking at nothing for longer than is productive. Students in biology have the opportunity to see tiny creatures collected from pond water, see their first Paramecium with their tiny cilia and Euglenas with flagella. Feeding Amoeba's yeast cells in order to witness cytoplasmic streaming is quite the experience too! Anatomy students when looking at cell and tissue differences have a much harder time deciphering differences when the view isn't clear. Blurry distorted images impair students from these views. New microscopes would mean the world to students and myself.
