My sixth grade science students attend a new school in a very old building in North Carolina. The school was shut down and left vacant for years, this year we are reopening it with only sixth grade students. Each year we will add a grade. It is a title one school with 98% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch and 97% minority students. We are a neighborhood school that has the highest crime rate in our district. Making learning exciting, meaningful, and connected to the community is so important especially in our inaugural year because our community was so angered by the closing down of the school, and has lost hope and trust in the district. It is my goal to transform the students and their parents to trust the school and to be so excited about learning in my classroom.
