My students come to school each day with a variety of social and emotional needs. One of my jobs as their teacher is to help guide them on ways to handle social and emotional situations. Using picture books is a great way to integrate social and emotional learning in the classroom. In addition to teaching my students about math and science, I strive to teach them how to be caring individuals. I want them to have coping skills and the ability to problem solve, respect each other, and work with each other. Every Monday at the start of the day, we will read one of the picture books as a class and reflect on the character's situations. We will share ways to connect what we learned from the book with our everyday lives. Once students' social and emotional needs are met, then the academic learning can happen! I look forward to using these books for many, many years with many more students!
