These books will allow students to engage with more diverse and complex texts than they would normally be able to. These books also allow students a chance to see themselves in the books that they are going to be reading. For example, Persepolis is a complex text presented in Graphic Novel form which allows students to feel comfortable reading something they wouldn't normally given a second look. The Leavers addresses issues of immigration which deeply impacts a large number of our school population. These books will also allow me to lead the charge in opening up more teachers to use multiple instead of leaning towards "safe" choices that don't carry as much meaning for our students.
