A cozy space just for me provides my classroom of developmentally delayed preschool children a place to explore and manage the big emotions that come with childhood. Children will be introduced to the cozy space during circle time. It is during our circle time that we practice and model age-appropriate techniques to manage emotions. These techniques might include taking deep breathes, using a breathing buddy, or using illustrations to show how an adult how they feel. A comfortable space is created to ensure safety, comfort, and positive strategies when faced with big emotions such as anger, sadness, or being scared. The cozy space provides a warm and natural environment that allows children to access various materials. These materials will engage their senses, such as books with calming illustrations, liquid timers, and textured pillows. Understanding that some children need a space that offers them an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of a classroom builds a strong foundation of social and emotional skills. The goal of having a cozy space is that children will be able to use at least one of the modeled techniques independently while engaged in a cozy space.
