Prior to the start of this year, our school has not had a functioning library in 4 years. Being the school's new Media Clerk, I have inventoried every book. Touching these books were extremely saddening, because not only were they coated in dust and from 1980-2003, but the majority of them were in need of repairing. The library does have a few newer book series however, they are very limited. There are 3 copies of each Diary of a Whimpy Kid books, the first 3 books of Harry Potter, 3 Captian Underpants books, and 10 Goosebumps books. After only three classes checking out books, all of the new book collections are checked out leaving my other classes stuck with books that don't strike their interests or look appealing because of the age of the book. By donating to this project, you will not only help expand the library, but you will help engage the students to find reading interesting simply by offering new books they want to read. The students have shared with me what genres interest them allowing me to decide what books to select. The students want to read. The school library is the only place many of these students can get books to read. Checking out books make the students feel special and have a place to escape to. With the lack of a newer book series, it is hard to encourage them to read when the books they truly want to read are not available. Creating a library the students want to travel through to is the main goal.
