This year I have decided to revamp one of the most crucial parts of the day; the first ten minutes after entering the classroom. My morning bins will change the way students perceive school. They will be excited to have choice activities, time to socialize with their peers and a chance to warm up their brains with engaging STEAM based challenges that foster cooperative learning.
The morning bins will replace paper and pencil entry tasks with engaging and interactive social games. I often have students enter my class with hesitation. My routines are traditional: you come in silently and get right to work. I've come to question my philosophy on this matter. I want to give my students time to settle in and interact with their peers in a fun yet structured way.
These morning bins will give my kindergartners something to look forward to as they get ready to come to school. My hope is that this will alleviate some anxieties that students often have with coming to school and departing from their parents.

Making this project happen will provide opportunities for my students to de-escalate from a hectic morning or a chance to share about something cool that happened over the weekend.
