I teach ELA SpEd to 7th graders. Several of my students have health and breathing issues. This year the air conditioning has been broken in our classroom due to construction on the school. The combination of hot air and a dusty classroom has triggered several allergic / breathing episodes in my class. Yesterday the conditions triggered a severe asthma attack in one of my students. After going through the critical response procedure with this student, I tried to think of what I could do to improve the physical conditions in my classroom. The janitorial staff does a fine job of getting any visible debris off of the floor. However, to get rid of dust and other allergens the carpets really should be thoroughly cleaned every day. A Roomba in my classroom would help me keep the carpets clean daily. This would be a piece of the puzzle for improving the learning conditions for my students.
