Reading books about your own identity group(s) can help people feel good about those parts of themselves. Reading books about others' identity group(s) can help expose students to different kinds of people and to develop empathy. A book like Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson celebrates the healing that can occur when a group of students share their stories. Liz Acevedo is the daughter of Dominican immigrants. Benjamin Alire Sáenz grew up Mexican American on the border of Mexico and New Mexico. Jason Reynolds says that "many book haters are boys. I know that many of these book-hating boys, don't actually hate books, they hate boredom." These authors write books that interest and engage my students. Students read higher than their tested reading level because they relate to these characters. By having multiple copies of these books, my students can form book clubs to discuss, analyze, and interact with each other on a deeper level creating a reading culture in our school.
