For academic learning to take place a child must be comfortable and confident in themselves and their environment. We do this through social and emotional supports in the classroom - giving them the skills to navigate social conflicts and other big upsets. "Emotions" is a kindergarten readiness goal we assess in the classroom all year long. Following NEMCSA's (Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency) School Readiness guidance, we strive to ensure that "Children, with the support of familiar adults, will demonstrate the ability to manage feelings, emotions, actions and behaviors with increasing independence." These supplies will help at-risk children cope with and learn from very big feelings that they do not understand. In planning for the fall school year, and with the constant stress that COVID-19 is causing, we will be providing sensory experiences and emotional supports that will allow the children to begin to name their feelings and take a breath, both necessary for self-regulation.
