As a veteran music teacher (20 proud years!) who adheres to the Orff philosophy of music education, I have come to recognize the importance of quality classroom instruments as tools in not only engaging students (particularly those who may not be partial to singing) but in encouraging creativity and collaboration while learning and putting into practice their musical skills. A student sitting at any of these instruments will have chances to be soloists, ensemble members, and accompanists with and for their classmates; they will grow in confidence, cooperation, and creativity. With an end goal of having a one-to-one ratio of instruments to children (as we strive to do with technology be it iPads or Chromebooks) the more instruments we can put in front of students, the more opportunities they will have to demonstrate many facets of their musical learning.
