In my classroom, I use frequent checks for understanding to help me determine how well my students are learning. I use different types of assessments and some of those are written quizzes. My students need privacy shields to help them focus as they are taking their quizzes so they can perform their best without being distracted by others. I also need to ensure that their work performance comes from them and not something they saw on their neighbor's paper. I'll use the privacy shields for many subjects, but particularly for assessing their knowledge of math concepts. Our learning activities involve a lot of group work and sharing our thinking, but assessing each student's knowledge of the material requires independent work and privacy shields are a necessity for this to happen. I also need small digital timers that are easy for my students to use for practicing reading fluency with their partners. Several times a week, I have students partner up and time each other when reading for one minute. They record the words per minute they read and set goals to beat their own score the next time. This motivates them to improve their reading accuracy and speed. Finally, I have requested a personal size laminator with plastic laminating pouches to use for laminating classroom charts and posters, lesson activity cards, and learning game materials. These items take a lot of time and work to make, and they don't hold up for long when they aren't laminated.
