These materials will help our class build a sensory room with a range of stimuli to help individuals develop and engage their senses. Research has shown that sensory rooms can heighten awareness, improve alertness, improve coordination and motor development, promote cognitive development by increased brain function, and encourage people to explore their environment. Another important role in the sensory room is to provide a sense of security. The Sensory Room is a supportive therapeutic environment which assists students in their self-calming efforts by offering them an environment of relaxation. It is a designated place designed to calm the senses where the student can experience calming visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli. Sensory breaks can increase the ability to calm down, focus, and self-regulate.
