Currently, in our Special Education Life Skills course the students are learning about setting goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based (S.M.A.R.T.) across seven areas of wellness. One area of wellness that we will be focusing on is nutrition and fitness. The Fitbit trackers will teach the students how to monitor their physical activity and hopefully, motivate the students to increase their daily activity. There are positive practices being implemented in the K-12 setting, on college campuses, and across communities to target all individuals in adopting a healthier lifestyle. The purpose of our proposed project is to explore supportive strategies and interventions, such as self monitoring and peer support, that have proven effective for behavior change and implement these strategies with students in our program who are interested in making changes to their current level of physical activity. Individuals with disabilities who were routinely physically active reported higher levels of community participation, travel, greater choice in activities, higher rates of employment, functional independence, engagement in social, and civic activities compared to their peers who were less physically active. Also, participation in physical activities has resulted in building friendships and community relationships, enriching overall social and emotional well-being. Supportive social environments can contribute to the motivation of individuals with disabilities to adopt a more physically active and healthy lifestyle. Our classroom project can provide the supportive environment for students to begin building on their physical activity and self-monitoring this activity with the use of Fitbit technology. Our students will work as a peer support group for motivation, while setting their own individual physical activity goals. Fitbit technology can be an effective intervention to engage individuals with disabilities in more physical activity, especially within an inclusive school and community environment.
