We will use these materials to complete several labs and tasks. The first task that students complete is called Basketball Math. The students use buckets as basketball goals. They will the number of shots they make out of 10 standing 1 yard away from the basket. They then have to continue to move the yardstick back another yard and attempt to make another 10 shots. Once the data is collected they are able to perform regression and use the information to make predictions about distance versus the number of shots made. The candy will be used in a task to simulate the population growth of zombies! We also do a class experiment called The Wave where we record the time it takes to do The Wave with increasing amounts of people. Sometimes we bring in other classes and teachers! The students get to analyze the data using regression and they are able to see which classes moved slower or faster, how the number of students impacts the time it takes to complete the wave and they get a chance to work collectively. Each task and lab hits multiple math standards, the students become proficient at using various kinds of technology, they learn to work together, and they improve their data analysis skills!
