The ELL students in the classroom are not able to be as actively engaged in the classroom when they first come to the United States since they are not familiar with the language. Technology will provide them with the resource to access materials which are being reviewed in the classroom. The students when they begin to understand the English Language in both the written and spoken word begin to thrive in the academic setting. Technology accelerates the acquisition of phonics, increases vocabulary, improves reading-comprehension skills, and encourages language development, according to Edutopia.org contributor Maya Payne Smart. Bringing technology into the classroom clearly has multiple benefits especially when they’re learning a second language. Students learn new vocabulary and develop skills necessary to thrive in the technology-rich 21st century, preparing them for success both in and beyond the classroom.
85% of the students are English Language Learners and the students are at the top 5% for the free lunch program. The school is made up of a 99% minority population. Students do not have computers available to them in their homes. The school is limited in resources for technology and the computers are often unavailable for instructional reading time.
